Four Pipers score goals in victory at Augsburg

Four different Pipers scored goals, and seven Hamline University players scored points, as they defeated the host Augsburg College Auggies, 4-3, in MIAC men's hockey play on Friday night.

After a scoreless opening period, Hamline took the first lead at 2:27 in the second period when Dustin Fulton (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.), scored a power play goal on a assists from the defensive pair of Chris Berenguer (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Jared Hummel (Fy., Eagan, Minn.).

Augsburg responded at 5:57 in the same period to tie the game, but Hamline regained the advantage less than two minutes later at 7:20 on a Joe Long (Jr., Dayton, Minn.).  Dustin Postell (So., Wadena, Minn.) was credited with the assist.

The Auggies evened the game up at 3-3 when they scored at 17:43 in the second.

After playing a scoreless opening 10 minutes of the final period, Nick Zilka broke through the scoring silence with an unassisted goal at 10:36, giving Hamline a 4-3 lead.

The Pipers increased their advantage to two goals when Andrew Birkholz (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored what was ultimately the game-winner at 12:48. Zilka and Fulton each added an assist.

Augsburg scored one more goal at 17:49, and played the final 1:23 with an empty net to try to send the game to overtime. However, the Pipers held on for the 4-3 win.

The Pipers improve to 12-6-4, 8-3-2 MIAC, while the Auggies fall to 5-15-2, 3-10-0 MIAC.  The same two teams play again on Hamline's home ice tomorrow night, Saturday, February 16, at 7:15 p.m. at Drake Arena.
