Pipers tie Saints in home opener

Hamline's men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 overtime tie as they hosted St. Scholastica in their 2007-08 home opener on Friday.

The Pipers fought off a 5-on-3 situation early in the third period when juniors Dustin Fulton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Joe Long (Little Falls, Minn.) wound up in the penalty box together. Hamline then prevented the Saints from walking out of their rink with a victory, scoring just over five minutes into the third period on Kyle Mattson's (Fy., Maple Grove, Minn.) first collegiate goal.

First-year Nick Zilka (Mound, Minn.) and sophomore Kyle Kurr (Elk River, Minn.) earned their first assists of the season with Mattson's score.

Sophomore goalie Zach Faust (White Bear Lake, Minn.) had someZach Faust tremendous saves in net while collecting 18 saves in the 65 minutes of play needed to leave the game in a tie.

Hamline remains at home tomorrow, Saturday, November 10, when they will host UW-Superior at 7:15 p.m. at Drake Arena.
