Pipers hand Johnnies 4-1 loss

Birkholz Fulton
The Hamline University men’s hockey team upped their MIAC rank to second place after handing visiting St. John’s University a 4-1 defeat at Drake Arena tonight.

MIAC-leading scorer Dustin Fulton (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) was the first to score, putting Hamline on the board at 16:32 in the first period.

In the second period, the Pipers increased their lead to three after Andrew Birkholtz (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) connected on a pass from Chris Berenguer at 3:07 (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn) and scored his first goal of the night. His second goal would come shortly after at 11:22. He was assisted by Fulton and Joe Long (Jr., Dayton, Minn.).

St. John’s didn’t score until the second period at 15:44 when Mike Wallgren, assisted by Pat Eagles, shot one past Piper goalie Matt Wanvig (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn.). However, that would be the only goal that Wanvig and the Pipers allowed the Johnnies.

Up 3-1 in the third period, Hamline sealed the victory at 14:38 when Kyle Kurr (So., Elk River, Minn.) scored his only goal of the game off a play by Matt Buckley (So., Dayton, Minn.) and Jim Erickson (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.).

With the win, Hamline is now 14-6-4 (10-3-2 MIAC), while the Johnnies fell to 12-10-2 (8-5-2 MIAC).

Hamline will finish the series against St. John’s tomorrow, in Collegeville, Minn. Face-off is set for 2:00 pm.
