Men's hockey topples Gustavus on the road![]()
The Pipers defeated Gustavus, picked to finish third in the MIAC in the pre-season coaches' poll, with five different players scoring points on their two goals. Hamline's first goal of the game came on Dustin Fulton's (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) second goal of the season on a pass from Jim Erickson (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.). The goal was scored just before the halfway-point of the first period. At 1:39 in the second period, Gustavus player Tim Ornell (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) found himself in the penalty box for interference, giving the Pipers a power play that they used to their advantage. Cory Krogen (So., Marshall, Minn.) gave Hamline the game-winning power play goal at 3:08 in the second period, with assists credited to Steve Festler (Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) and Jared Hummel (Fy., Eagan, Minn.). Gustavus' lone goal came at 17:21 in the second period from Rory Dynan (So., Maple Plain, Minn.). Zach Faust (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) played 20 shut-out minutes in net for the Pipers, making eight saves, before Matt Wanvig (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) came in to start the second period. Wanvig finished out the game, totaled 21 saves and earned his first decision in goal this season. Hamline improved to 1-2-2, 1-0-0 MIAC with the win, having earned ties or wins in their last three games. Gustavus dropped to 2-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAC. The Pipers host the Gusties tomorrow, Saturday, November 17, at 7:15 p.m. at Drake Arena. |
