Special teams power Pipers past Cardinals

While taking 14 shots in going 3-for-6 on the power play, the Hamline University men's hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary's on the road to complete the series sweep.

After a scoreless opening period, Saint Mary's scored the first goal of the game just 39 seconds into the second period. Hamline waitied nearly 18 minutes to answer back when defenseman Cory Krogen (So., Marshall, Minn.) took advantage of a Piper power play at 18:26. Jared Hummel (Fy., Eagan, Minn.) and Dustin Fulton (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) combined on the assists.

The Pipers and Cardinals started the third period tied at 1-1, until Steve Festler (Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) scored on another power play at 1:33. He was assisted by Fulton and Joe Long (Jr., Dayton, Minn.).

The final Hamline goal came from Cole Scattarelli (So., Elk River, Minn.) as he scored his first goal of the year on the Pipers' final power play opportunity with an empty net at 19:28.

The Pipers are now 9-4-2, 5-1-0 MIAC, while Saint Mary's fell to 6-8-2, 4-4-0 MIAC. Hamline remains on the road, playing at St. Olaf next Friday, January 25, at 7:00 p.m.
