Birkholz earns MIAC honors

Andrew Birkholz
Andrew Birkholz (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored two goals and had three assists in a historic series against St. Thomas this weekend, and was named MIAC men's hockey athlete of the week for his efforts, the conference office announced today.

The sophomore forward led the Pipers to a win and a tie against fifth-ranked St. Thomas, securing three of four available points for Hamline in the weekend series. The three points acquired put the Pipers in a third-place tie in the conference standings, one point behind St. Thomas and three behind Bethel.

In Friday night's 5-4 victory, which was the first for the Pipers over St. Thomas since the 1992-93 season (the Pipers were 0-30-1 in the 15 seasons between wins), Birkholz scored the game-winning goal and added three assists - taking part in the scoring in four of Hamline's five goals. In Saturday's 3-3 tie, Birkholz scored the Piper's third goal.

The Pipers are 11-6-4, 7-3-2 MIAC and take on Augsburg in this weekend's conference match-up. Hamline travels to Augsburg for a 7:05 p.m. start on Friday, and hosts the Auggies at Drake Arena at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.
