Comeback falls short for men's hockey

The Hamline men's hockey came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the third period, but UW-Stevens Point answered with a game-winning power-play goal to defeat the Pipers 4-3 Saturday night at Drake Arena.

The Pipers (0-3-1) fell behind by three goals in the first period, but battled back.  Senior forward Mike Forconi started the comeback with a his first goal of the season at 3:15 of the second period.  Forconi beat Pointer goaltender Marcus Paulson gloveside on the breakaway goal.

Less than three minutes later, first-year Justin Hanna scored on the power play to cut the lead to 3-2. First-year Dustin Fulton later tied the game at 3:46 of the third period with a short-handed goal.

But the Pointers (3-2) added the game-winner at 7:45 when Colin Trulock scored on the power play.

Stevens Point built a 3-0 lead in the first period while outshooting the Pipers 17-9. Brett Beckfield, James Jernberg, and Tom Vernelli each tallied first period goals for the Pointers. 

Stevens Point held a 39-4 advantage in shots on goal for the game, but the Pipers outshot them 25-22 over the final 40 minutes.

Hamline netminder Todor Petkov made 35 saves for the Pipers while Paulson stopped 31 shots for the Pointers.

The Pipers will open conference play next week when they travel to Augsburg on Friday. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
