Men's hockey falls in overtime

Hamline outshot the Cardinals 32-22, but St. Mary's scored at the 2:52 mark of the overtime period to claim a 2-1 win Friday night at Drake Arena.

Hamline (3-13-2, 2-6-1 in the MIAC) held a 25-13 edge in shots on goal over the last 40 minutes of regulation, tying the game at 1-1 in the third period on a Ted Urschel power-play goal with 7:08 elapsed.

However, Custis Nosal stopped 24 shots in the second and third periods and 31 for the game to earn the victory.

Jesse Polk broke the 1-1 tie with a wrister from the slot past Hamline netminder Todor Petkov at the 2:52 mark of overtime. He was fed by Adam Fingerhut on the game-winning goal.

St. Mary's (5-13-1, 4-7) took the lead on the very first shift of the game as Marcus Reszka fired a shot past Petkov at the 22-second mark.

Petkov made 20 saves for the Pipers.

Hamline was 1 of 7 on the power play in the contest while the Cardinals were 0 of 4 with an extra skater.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday.  Game time in Winona, Minn. is set for 7:05 p.m.
