Men's hockey ties UW-Eau Claire 4-4

First-year forward Joe Long scored a pair of power-play goals as the Pipers earned a tie with UW-Eau Claire 4-4 Friday night at Drake Arena.

With the score tied at 1-1, Long gave the Pipers (0-2-1) a lead with 4:39 elapsed in the second period off assists from Dustin Fulton and Justin Hanna. A little more than six minutes later, Long capitalized on the power play again with a wrister from the top of the faceoff circle to make the score 3-1.

Eau Claire (0-2-2) would tie the score heading into the second intermission on goals from Steve Dus and Mike Schneider.

The Pipers netted a short-handed goal early in the third period when Ben Gustafson scored a rebound goal with assists from Alex Spies and Ted Urschel to give Hamline a 4-3 edge.

The lead held until 16:46 of the third period when Ben Bosworth fired a wrister from the slot to tie the game.  Both teams had two shots in the overtime period, but could not score.

The Pipers grabbed a 1-0 lead on Justin Hanna's first goal of the season. The Blugolds tied the game early in the second period on a Brooks Lockwood goal - part of a three-goal second period for the Blugolds.

First-year goaltender Cameron Voss stopped 26 shots for the Pipers. His counterpart Chris Nelson made 23 saves for the Blugolds.

Hamline will host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. Game time at Drake Arena is set for 7:15 p.m.
