Petkov, Kilby have big games in Piper win

Griffin Kilby scored two goals and an assist in Hamline's 3-2 win over Bethel.
Goaltender Todor Petkov stopped 39 shots and forward Griffin Kilby netted two goals and an assist as the Hamline men's hockey team defeated Bethel 3-2 Friday night at Drake Arena.

Petkov stopped the first 30 shots he faced as the Pipers (4-15-3, 3-8-2 in the MIAC) claimed a 3-0 lead early in the third period.

Kilby started the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:13 of the first period when Justin Hanna dumped a puck into the offensive zone. The puck bounced directly to Kilby who shot at an open net.

After a scoreless second period, Kilby scored on a 5-on-3 power play to give Hamline a 2-0 lead. He later assisted on a Luke Chilson power-play goal at 2:53 of the third period.

The Royals (8-12-2, 6-5-2) stormed back with a pair of goals - both on the power play. Nick Miller scored at 4:07, and Jon Kramer added another goal at 12:14.

From there, Petkov stood tall, making 12 saves in the third period, including a 6-on-4 power play over the last 53 seconds of the game. Royal goaltender Dustin Thompson made 12 saves in the loss.

Hamline was 3 of 8 with an extra skater. The Royals were 2 of 8 on the power play.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Bethel. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
