Men's hockey defeated by Augsburg 5-3

The Hamlline men's hockey team opened conference play with a 5-3 loss to Augsburg Friday night in Minneapolis, Minn.

Auggie Cody Swanson scored to goals and assisted on another to lead Augsburg (4-1, 1-0 in the MIAC). Swanson netted a goal and an assist in the first period of play as Augsburg took a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

The lead grew to 4-1 on goals by Critter Nagurski and Swanson in the second period, before the Pipers (0-4-1) made a comeback. First-year Justin Hanna netted his third goal of the season at 14:23 while first-year Tom Stunyo added his first goal of the season at 17:58 to cut the lead to 4-3 after two periods.

Augsburg would add a goal at the 6:07 mark by Joe Haehn to seal the win.

After the Auggies took an early one-goal lead, senior Mike Forconi scored his second goal of the season at 15:25 of the first period to knot the game at 1-1.

Augsburg held a 32-27 advantage in shots on goal. Hamline netminder Todor Petkov stopped 27 shots for the Pipers. Tony Ciro made 24 saves for the Auggies.

The two teams will meet at Drake Arena on Saturday. Game time is set for 7:15 p.m.
