DeRock, Thrasher not enough against Colorado-Pueblo

Sophomores Jon DeRock and Tony Thrasher combined for 50 points, but it wasn't enough as the Hamline men's basketball team fell to Div. II Colorado-Pueblo 86-71 Saturday night in the Al Kaly Shrine Classic at Pueblo, Colo.

DeRock finished the night with 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Thrasher added 22 points on 10-of-19 from the floor.

The Pipers (1-1) played toe-to-toe with the Div. II Thunderwolves (2-0) for most of the game. After trailing by eight at the break, Hamline pulled to within three on two separate ocassions in the second half - the last coming at 8:25 when a DeRock layup made the score 68-65.

From there, Colorado-Pueblo scored the next seven points of the game over the next 5:08 to put the game out of reach.

The Pipers shot 46.6 percent for the game (27-of-58) while the Thunderwolves were 29-of-51 from the field (56.9 percent). Colorado-Pueblo also shot well from behind the arc, converting on 10-of-22 attempts from behind the arc. The Pipers were held to 3-of-7 from three-point range.

Brett Cloepfil led the Thunderwolves with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He was one of four players in double figures.

Senior Kyle Foster added six points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Pipers.

Hamline will playat Northwestern next Saturday. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
