Men's basketball wins opener over Colorado College

Sophomore guard Jon DeRock netted 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting and the Pipers shot 65.5 percent in the second half to defeat Colorado College 91-84 Friday night at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic in Pueblo, Colo.

After trailing 41-40 at the break and 73-70 midway through the second half, Hamline (1-0) went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.

DeRock and forward Tony Thrasher each had five points during the run that lasted 2:42. DeRock was a perfect 5-of-5 shooting in the second half, scoring 14 of his team-high 24 in the final 20 minutes. Thrasher finished the game with 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting to go along with nine rebounds.

Colorado College (0-1) could get no closer that four points the rest of the way. They were paced by Jarrell Sweet's 29 points.

The Pipers put four players in double figures for the contest. Junior Kory Kelzer added 15 points while senior Kyle Foster added 10.

Hamline shot 54.7 percent for the contest (35-of-64), including 19-of-29 in the second half, while Colorado College shot at a 48.1 percent clip for the game.

The Pipers will play Colorado-Pueblo Saturday night in the Al Kaly Shrine Classic. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
