Bethel pulls away from men's basketball

Royal Tim Madson scored 20 points to lead Bethel to an 83-68 win over Hamline Saturday night in Arden Hills, Minn.

Madson was 6-of-17 from the floor and added 7-of-7 from the line for the Royals (11-5, 6-5 in the MIAC). The Royals made 18-of-23 free throws in the contest while the Pipers made 6-of-12 attempts.

Hamline (5-12, 3-9) was paced by sophomore Jon DeRock who netted 16 points. He led three Pipers in double figures. Tony Thrasher and Kyle Foster each chipped in 13 points.

Bethel converted on 43.9 percent of their shots in the game (29-66). Hamline made 37 percent from the floor (27-73).

The Pipers trailed by just two points with just under four minutes to play in the half, but Bethel outscored Hamline 7-2 the rest of the half to go into the break with their largest lead of the game at 38-31.

In the second half, after a Thrasher three-point play to open play, Bethel ensued on a 16-2 run to take command 54-36. Madson had eight points during the spurt, and Mike Moberg added six of his 17 points in the span.

The Pipers immediately whittled the lead to 11 after back-to-back Bethel turnovers led to Hamline buckets. Hamline eventual cut the deficit to 65-56 on a Thrasher bucket with nearly six minutes remaining, but could get no closer.

Charles Meadowcroft added 15 points and 15 rebounds for Bethel, who held a 53-37 advantage on the boards.

Hamline will play at St. Thomas on Wednesday. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
