Johnnies defeat men's basketball 82-62

Sophomore Joe Smock scored nine points in Hamline's 82-62 loss to St. John's.
Tim Veurink came off the bench to score 19 points as St. John's defeated Hamline 82-62 Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.

Veurink entered the contest averaging 2.7 points a game for the Johnnies (7-6, 5-3 in the MIAC), but the junior went 7 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 from beyond the three-point line.

For the game, the Johnnies went 11 of 20 from beyond the arc.

Tyler Westman added 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Ryan Lieser and Jocob Kincaide each added 10 points for the Johnnies.

Hamline was led by junior Kyle Foster, who netted 16 points, but was hampered by foul problems in the entire game. Tony Thrasher added 13 points and Jon DeRock scored 11. Foster and Thrasher each pulled down six rebounds.

Early on the Pipers (5-8, 4-4) looked solid, claiming a 19-9 lead with 11:25 left in the first half. Sophomore Joe Smock hit two threes during the run. But the Johnnies answered with a 19-4 run to close half to take a 32-27 lead at the break. Veurink scored 10 points, including 3 three-pointers during the stretch.

In the second half, the Johnnies pulled away with solid shooting, going 18 of 28 in the second half (64 percent) and 7 of 9 from three (78 percent).

Hamline will next play at Bethel on Monday. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
