DeRock leads men's basketball past Martin Luther
DeRock came close to a triple-double in his second career game. He totaled 20 points with nine rebounds and nine assists. He also added four steals. Junior forward Kyle Foster added 18 points with 11 coming in a first half that saw the Pipers take a 32-30 lead. The Pipers shot just 29 percent in the first (12-42) but grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and forced the Knights (0-2) into 19 first half turnovers. With the Pipers up 63-60 with 4:44 left in the contest, Hamline went on a decisive 14-1 run. Senior guard Jesse Hendricks scored five points of his seven points during the run. Martin Luther led by as many as eight on two occasions, including a 43-35 lead with 16:16 left in the contest, but the Pipers erased it with a 9-0 spurt. DeRock started run with a basket and followed with three straight assists to give Hamline the lead. The Knights were led by Caleb Kurbis' 18 points on 7 of 10 from the floor. Nathan Nass added 12 while Jacob Schwartz had 11. Hamline forced Martin Luther into 31 turnovers for the game. Junior point guard Sam Wiener had five steals to go along with five assists. |
