DeRock leads men's basketball past Macalester![]()
![]() DeRock scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in a second half that saw the Pipers (8-12, 7-8 in the MIAC) outscore Macalester (7-14, 6-10) 46-36 in the final 20 minutes. After trailing 36-31 at the break and by as many as eight points in the second half, DeRock scored seven points during a 12-0 spurt that gave Hamline the lead with 14:47 to play. For there, the back-and-forth contest was tied six times until Hamline broke a 66-66 tie with two straight buckets by Joe Smock - the last with 2:33 left in the game. Junior Sam Wiener would score five points in the final minute, including a big three-point with under a minute to play that gave the Pipers a 73-68 lead. DeRock finished the day shooting 10 of 14 from the field for 24 points. He added four rebounds and four steals. Smock added 15 points, and senior Charley Good tallied 12. Junior Kyle Foster grabbed 12 rebounds. Tom Conboy scored 22 points on 9 of 12 shooting to lead the Scots. Nate Assel chipped in 11 points. Jesse Hollander and Brendan Bosman each totaled 10 points. The Pipers shot 57 percent in the second half (17-30) and 50 percent for the game (29-58). After shooting 63 percent in the first half, Macalester cooled off to 42 percent in the second half. Hamline will host Augsburg Monday night at Hutton Arena. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. |
