Pipers hold off Macalester for second straight win

Jon DeRock scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Hamline's win on Wednesday.
The Hamline men's basketball team led by as many as 17 points late in the first half and went on to defeat Macalester 77-71 Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

In a frantic first half, Pipers (4-6, 3-2 in the MIAC) held the Scots (3-8, 2-4) to just 26 percent (9-35) shooting and once claimed a 35-18 lead with 3:24 left in the half. But the Scots whittled to the lead to nine by the break.

Macalester would eventually cut the lead to 63-57 with 5:35 remaining, but Hamline went on a quick 7-0 run sparked by Joe Smock's three-point play.

The Scots stormed back to cut the lead to 71-69 on three straight three-pointers - the last coming with 1:15 left in the game. However, Hamline was too strong down the stretch. Kyle Foster answered with a layup on the Pipers' next possession. Sam Wiener and Tony Thrasher each added a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Thrasher led the Pipers in scoring for the fourth time in five games with 15 points. He also added nine rebounds. Jon DeRock and Kory Kelzer each added 12 points while Wiener added 11.

Tom Conboy led all scorers with 22 points for Macalester. Brenden Bosman chipped in 17 points - 13 in the second half.

The Pipers shot 47 percent for the game (27-58), including 54 percent in the first half.

Hamline will look for their third straight win when they travel to Augsburg on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
