Men's basketball goes cold in the second half

The Pipers were held to just 26 percent shooting in the second half as Gustavus outscored Hamline 42-25 over the final 20 minutes for a 70-52 win Wednesday night in St. Peter, Minn.

Hamline (1-3, 0-1 in the MIAC) trailed 28-27 at the break, but Gustavus (4-0, 1-0) forced the Pipers into 6 of 23 shooting from the field over the final 20 minutes of the game. Gustavus was 12 of 24 from the floor and also hit 16 of 21 free throw attempts in the second half.

Trevor Wittwer led Gustavus with 17 points and nine rebounds in the game. Andrew Olson added 16 points with Phil Sowden chipping in 13.

Hamline was paced by first-year David Johnson's 17 points - 15 coming in the first half.  Johnson was 8 of 12 shooting with three rebounds.  First-year Jon DeRock netted 13 points and five rebounds.

The Pipers trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before trimming the lead to one at the break on a Johnson layup with 37 seconds left in the half.  

But Gustavus went on a 14-3 spurt to start the second half. Jay Stien had a pair of buckets during the run that lasted 7:44.

The Pipers will next play at Carleton on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
