Men's basketball loses at Bethel

Bethel shot 56 percent for the game as the Royals defeated Hamline 94-82 Monday night in Arden Hills, Minn.

The Royals (9-5, 4-5 in the MIAC) were 61 percent from the floor (19-31) while building a 50-41 halftime lead. They wouldn't cool off in the second half, hitting 50 percent of their shots (15-30).

Matt Frederickson scored 24 points, including 10 of 10 from the free throw line, to lead all scorers. Isaac Hinrichs netted 15 points with Tyson Bjorklund adding 14.

Hamline (5-9, 4-5) was paced by junior forward Kyle Foster, who led five players in double figures with 15 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

Sam Wiener scored 13 points with five assists. Jon DeRock had 11 points with Tony Thrasher and Kory Kelzer each tallying 10 apiece.

The Pipers shot a respectable 43 percent for the game (31-73), but went 7 of 23 from beyond the arc.

After an up-and-down first half, Bethel extended the lead to as many as 18 points with 12:08 to play in the game. But Hamline responded with a quick 9-0 run to cut the lead to 74-65 with more than 10 minutes to go. Hamline eventually sliced the lead to 84-80 on a Zev Kujolic three-pointer with 3:25 remaining.

Bethel would take care of the game at the line hitting 8 of 8 free throws down the stretch - six by Frederickson.

Hamline will complete the first round of conference games Wednesday night at Hutton Arena when they host Concordia. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
