Gymnasts finish fifth at NCGA Championships

The Pipers took fifth in the team competition during the first day of competition at the NCGA Championships held Friday at UW-Whitewater.

The Pipers scored 182.575 to take fifth overall. UW-Oshkosh knocked off six-time NCGA champion UW-La Crosse to earn the team championship with a score of 185.575. Ursinus was second while La Crosse was third.

Four of the top five teams came from the West Region as host UW-Whitewater was fourth.

Sophomore Alex Hughes qualified for the individual finals in both the vault and floor exercise. Hughes is tied for 11th in the vault with a score of 9.55 and 12th in the floor exercise with a score of 9.525.

The top 14 competitors in each event qualify for the finals. The top eight in each event earn All-America status.

Hamline put two athletes in the finals in the uneven bars - both are currently in the top eight. Sophomore Alisha Anderson is tied for third with a 9.6. Sophomore Kristen Weniger is tied for sixth with a 9.575.

Weniger narrowly missed qualifying in the balance beam - finishing 15th with a score of 9.0. Weniger was tied for 11th in the all-around competition, scoring a 36.95 in the four events.
