Football falls to Gustavus

Sean Lewis Andrew Seymour
After not scoring in the first 30 minutes of play to go down 41-0 by halftime, the Pipers had three passing touchdowns in the second half as they fell 57-21 to Gustavus Adolphus College today in St. Peter.

Gustavus scored their first touchdown a little over eight minutes into the game, and added five more before the half, missing a point-after attempt on one of the touchdowns.

Immediately following the start of the second half, it appeared that Gustavus was going to mimic their first half scoring when they added a touchdown to their tally with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter to go up 48-0. But the Pipers added some offense of their own, answering with a touchdown from sophomore Sean Lewis (Minneapolis, Minn.) from a nine-yard pass from senior quarterback Chad Schmigel (Ridgecrest, Calif.). Sophomore Derek Johnson's (Casa Grande, Ariz.) kick was good, to get the Pipers on the board at 48-7.

Gustavus added their first field goal of the day and another touchdown, before the Pipers' senior Andrew Seymour (Sandstone, Minn.) hauled in a 58-yard touchdown pass from Schmigel with a successful point-after attempt from Johnson to get to 57-14.

The final Hamline score of the day came with Lewis' second touchdown reception of the day, this time from junior quarterback James Leary (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), along with a third successful kick from Johnson to bring the final score to 57-21.

Gustavus stiffled Hamline on the ground, holding them to just 64 rushing yards, 37 of those from first-year Mark Masso (Farmington, Minn.), while accumulating 248. The Pipers quarterbacks amassed 285 yards in the air, while Gustuvus had 353.

Seymour led the Pipers with 113 yards and a touchdown. Lewis' two touchdowns against Gustavus bring him to three total on the year.

The Pipers fall to 1-2 (0-2 MIAC), while Gustavus remains undefeated at 3-0 (2-0 MIAC). Hamline remains on the road next week, traveling to Macalester at 1:00 p.m.
