Tommies defeat football, 35-7
St. Thomas (6-3, 5-2 in the MIAC) jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Running back Scott Brink scored on an 8-yard run on Tommies' opening possession. On their next drive, Sauer found Sam Moen for a 10-yard touchdown. Hamline would cut the lead in half with a four-play, 73-yard drive capped by a Ben Ganske 30-yard scamper with 7:39 left in the second quarter. The run was set up by a 45-yard completion from quarterback James Leary to Brent Nelson. The Tommies would answer before the half on Sauer's second touchdown pass of the day - a 14-yard hookup to Tony Margarit with 1:24 left in the half. Sauer was 13-of-17 passing for 151 yards in the first half. He finished 21-of-32 passing for 273 yards and four touchdowns. Brink would add his second touchdown of the day on a 50-yard screen pass from Sauer with 6:30 left in the third quarter. Margarit added a 17-yard touchdown catch - his second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Brink had 141 total yards (50 rushing, 91 receiving) with two scores. Margarit caught four passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Nelson caught three passes for 81 yards for the Pipers. Ganske finished with 92 yards rushing on 20 carries. Leary was 7-of-11 passing for 91 yards before being knocked out of the game with an injury. St. Thomas gained 393 yards - 273 through the air. The Pipers had 295 yards of total offense. Linebacker Paul Klees led the Piper defense with 11 tackles in the game. The Pipers will close out their season Thursday night when they play Augsburg at the Metrodome. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. |
