Football stifled by St. John's

St. John's wide receiver Kyle Gearman caught five passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Johnnies to a 56-7 win over Hamline Saturday afternoon in Collegeville, Minn.

After the Johnnies (8-0, 6-0 in the MIAC) scored three second quarter touchdowns to take a 21-0 halftime lead, St. John's put the game away with three touchdown receptions by Gearman - all in the third quarter.

Gearman scored on receptions of 25, 46, and 38 yards in a span of 4:13. His 46 and 38-yard touchdown receptions capped one-play drives.

The Johnnies also received rushing touchdowns from three different players. Running back Mike Lofboom scored from 1-yard out to open the scoring at 14:14 of the second quarter. Mike Patnode added a 5-yard score, and Aaron Blackmore scored on a 9-yard run.

Hamline (3-4, 1-4) got on the board at the 6:14 mark of the fourth quarter when Cohlman Rutschow found Brandon Johnson for a 9-yard touchdown. It was set up by a St. John's fumble.

St. John's, who entered the game as the third-ranked team in the country according to the AFCA, outgained the Pipers 449-62.

Running back Ben Ganske rushed for 21 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback James Leary was 6-of-19 passing for 17 yards while Rutschow was 2-of-5 for 20 yards and a score. Tight end Jeff Hanger led the receivers with two catches for 20 yards.

Senior strong safety Tyler Schultz made nine tackles for the Piper defense.

Hamline will host Bethel next Saturday at Klas Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
