Football handles Macalester, 35-7

The Pipers jumped out to a 28-0 lead at halftime and went on to a 35-7 victory over Macalester to keep the Old Paint Bucket Saturday afternoon at Klas Field.

Hamline (2-2) won the Old Paint Bucket for the 19th time in 20 chances.

The Pipers scored off two Macalester turnovers in the first quarter. After the Scots (1-4) fumbled on their opening possession, Hamline went 27 yards on four plays. Junior running back Ben Ganske scored from 16 yards out with 12:26 left in the quarter.

Ganske later caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback James Leary to cap a 30-yard drive after a Macalester turnover. Ganske finished the game with 67 yards rushing on 13 carries and two catches for nine yards and two scores.

Macalester looked to cut the lead in half after a long drive, but cornerback Pat Robinson stepped in front of a Nick Slobe pass at the goal-line and returned the interception 99 yards for a score.

The Pipers capped the scoring in the first half with a well-executed two-minute drill, going 63 yards on four plays in 57 seconds. Wide receiver Andrew Seymour scored on a 11-yard run off an end around with 59 seconds left in the half.

Hamline outgained the Scots 171-94 in the first half and forced three Scot turnovers. For the game, the Pipers held a 313-272 advantage on offensive yards.

Macalester scored their lone points of the game midway through the third quarter when Slobe connected with Gavin Keisling on a 14-yard pass play.  The Scots went 76 yards in nine plays for the score.

Hamline linebacker Brody Anderson added the game's final points, scoring on a 61-yard run off a fake punt with 6:10 left in the third quarter.

The Pipers rushed for 162 yards on the day. Macalester did most of their damage through the air, throwing for 220 yards.

Senior strong safety Tyler Schultz made nine tackles on the day for Hamline. Peter Christenson led the Scot defense with 10 tackles.

The Pipers will host Concordia next Saturday for Homecoming.  The kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
