Football loses season finale to Augsburg![]()
![]() Playing for injured starting quarterback James Leary, sophomores Cohlman Rutschow and Chad Schmigel combined to throw for 352 yards, but were picked off three times. Midway through the fourth quarter trailing 21-17, the Pipers (3-7, 1-7 in the MIAC) were driving in Augsburg territory when Auggie Andy Roff picked off Rutschow and went 62 yards for a touchdown. Rutschow finished 14-of-24 for 209 yards and an interception. Schmigel finished the evening 9-of-11 for 143 yards and two interceptions. Hamline outgained Augsburg (1-9, 1-7) 501-392 in the contest and 149-46 on the ground, but trailed 14-10 at the break. Hamline led 10-7 on a Ben Ganske 1-yard touchdown run with 3:28 left in the second quarter, but the Auggies answered before halftime with quarterback Jordan Berg's 7-yard scoring run. Augsburg upped the lead to 21-10 on James Strand's 30-yard run with 10:10 left in the third quarter. Rutschow started a Hamline comeback with a 1-yard plunge late in the third quarter. Ganske led the Piper rushing attached with 122 yards on 22 carries and a score. Junior wide receiver Andrew Seymour caught 10 passes for 138 yards. First-year Sean Lewis added three catches for 88 yards. Berg threw for 346 yards on 34-of-44 passing with one touchdown and one interception. Strand rushed for 46 yards on 11 carries. Tight end Andrew Neumann had 10 receptions for 95 yards. Wide receiver Ricky Schreier added six catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. Senior free safety Tyler Schultz had 11 tackles for the defense. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection finishes his career with 362 career tackles.
