Football loses to St. Olaf 49-14
St. Olaf remained undefeated (7-0, 5-0 in the MIAC) with the victory. Senior quarterback Jason Wilsey threw for 180 yards on 12 of 20 passing and three touchdowns - two to wide receiver Andrew Schmiesing. With the score tied at 7-7, running back Ben Roff gave St. Olaf the lead with a two-yard scoring plunge on the first play of the second quarter. The two-point conversion made the score 15-7. Wilsey would add his second touchdown pass and first to Schmiesing with 6:25 left in the half to make it 22-7 at the break. The Oles would break the game open with a 24-point third quarter. The Pipers (2-5, 1-5) gave St. Olaf a short field for most of the quarter. An 83-yard kickoff return by Marc Olson to begin the second half and two bad snaps on punts set the Oles up. St. Olaf scored 24 points on total of 79 yards. Schmiesing caught his second touchdown pass of the game. Running backs Bobby Andrade and Chris Freehan had scoring runs of 1 and 2 yards, respectively. After St. Olaf scored on their first drive of the game on a Wilsey 25-yard touchdown pass to Preston St. John, the Pipers answered to make the score 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Johnson caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Seymour to cap an 11-play, 68-yard drive set up by a roughing the punter penalty. Hamline would add a touchdown late in the third quarter when first-year running back Mike LaBore caught a 12-yard touchdown from James Leary with 1:02 left in the third quarter. LaBore set up the score with a 46-yard screen play down to the Ole 12. St. Olaf rolled up 432 yards of offense. Schmiesing ended the game with five catches for 87 yards and two scores. St. Olaf also added 227 yards on the ground. Hamline was held to 174 yards of offense. Seymour was 8 of 15 passing for 97 yards and one touchdown, but was picked off three times. Backup Leary was 3 of 7 for 72 yards and a touchdown. The Pipers will travel to Macalester next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. |
