The Hamline defense forced five turnovers with four coming in the first half, but the Johnnie offense opened up the game with a 23-point third quarter as St. John's defeated Hamline 44-0 Saturday afternoon in Collegeville, Minn.

The Pipers (2-2, 1-2 in the MIAC) took the ball away from the Johnnies (5-0, 3-0) on their first two possessions of the game. On the Johnnies' first play from scrimmage, senior free safety Ryan Laube picked off an Alex Kofoed pass to give Hamline the ball in St. John's territory.

Later in the first quarter, Hamline thwarted an 80-yard St. John's drive after linebacker Paul Klees forced a Johnnie fumble at the Hamline goalline.

St. John's would score on their next two possessions on rushing scores by Mike Lofboom and Corey Weber to make the score 14-0 at the break.

In the second half, two blocked punts set up Weber's second score of the game - a 2-yard plunge - and a 3-yard touchdown pass from Kofoed to Lofboom. The Johnnies also added a safety and a 12-yard Weber touchdown run to make the score 37-0 after three quarters.

St. John's totaled 506 yards of total offense while the Piper offense gained 106 yards on the day.

Piper strong safety Tyler Schultz intercepted two passes on the day to bring his conference-leading total to five in four games. Schultz also added 10 tackles (two solo, eight assists). Laube added 12 tackles on the day (eight solo, four assists).

Sophomore running back Ben Ganske gained 62 yards on 20 carries. Senior Chet Lexvold had 16 yards on three carries.

The Pipers will next host Concordia for Homecoming next Saturday. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.
