Football steamrolls Macalester to keep Old Paint Bucket
![]() Hamline (3-5) scored 21 points in the first 5:09 of the contest. The Piper offense had to move just 41 yards to put the points on the board. After a fumble on the Scots' (0-8) third play from scrimmage, Hamline went 25 yards for a score. First-year quarterback James Leary found Josh Johnson for a 22-yard score. On Macalester's next possession, Piper defensive end Tyler Scholl recovered a fumble in the end zone to make the score 14-0. Macalester would fumble yet again to set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Ben Ganske with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter. Hamline forced a total of seven turnovers in the contest. They entered the game tied for third in the nation in turnover margin. They finished with three fumbles and four interceptions in the game. Senior Tyler Schultz had two interceptions and recovered a fumble in the contest. The Pipers added a 16-yard touchdown pass from Leary to Mike LaBore to extend the lead to 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. Ganske would score his second touchdown of the day on a 12-yard run and Leary added a 41-yard scamper to make it 40-0 at the break. Leary added his third touchdown pass of the game to Jacob Temp - an 18-yard throw - in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Andrew Seymour added a one-yard plunge for the game's final tally. Leary finished the game 9 of 12 passing for 133 yards and three scores. He added 53 yards on the ground on nine attempts. Junior Ben Dahmes led the team's rushing attack with 64 yards on 14 carries. The Pipers gained 199 yards on the ground. The Hamline defense held the Scots to 145 yards of total offense. Hamline posted 389 yards on the day. Hamline will host St. Thomas next Saturday at Klas Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. |
