Carleton comes back to beat football![]()
![]() The Knights (4-6, 2-6 in the MIAC) trailed 19-13 late in the fourth quarter, but went on a 10-play 58-yard drive to take the lead. Jackson carried the ball six times on the drive including the last four plays. The Pipers (3-7, 1-7) stuffed Jackson on each of his first three carries before he inched over the goal line on fourth down. Jackson finished the day with 14 carries for 59 yards and two scores. He also caught two passes for 18 yards. The Pipers took control in the third quarter with touchdowns on their first two possession of the second half to take the lead. They took the second half kickoff and went 65 yards in 10 plays capped by a 33-yard touchdown pass from James Leary to Brent Nelson with 12:36 in the third quarter. The extra point snap was fumbled, but the game was tied at 13-13. Hamline took the lead less than five minutes later on a 16-yard touchdown run by Ben Dahmes. The extra point was no good to make the score 19-13. Dahmes rushed for two scores on the day. He scored on an 8-yard run to give the Pipers a 7-0 lead. Dahmes rushed for 73 yards on 25 carries. Carleton went in at halftime with a 13-7 lead. Jackson scored on a 17-yard run to knot the game at 7-7. After a Piper fumble gave Carleton the ball at the Hamline 5, backup quarterback John Hollowed found Matt Kootsika for an 8-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in the half. Hamline quarterback James Leary was 18 for 32 passing for 192 yards and a score. He was intercepted twice. Carleton signal caller Darren Caspars was 9 of 15 for 150 yards. He was injured early in the contest, but came back to lead the Knights on their game-winning drive. Hollowed was 5 of 12 for 44 yards in relief. He threw one touchdown and was picked off twice. One of the those interceptions went to senior safety Tyler Schultz, who finished the season with eight interceptions - one short of the Hamline record held by Chris Nylund. Schultz was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V on Thursday. He added 10 tackles (nine solo, one assist) and one pass breakup. |
