Pipers fall to #10 Johns Hopkins in Arizona finale

Andrew Bennett Jayden Grupe
Despite Hamline University's baseball team scoring first with two runs in the opening innint, tenth-ranked Johns Hopkins proved to be too much for the Pipers, as Hamline fell in eight innings, 14-3, on the final day of play in Phoenix, Arizona.

As the home team on the scoreboard, the Pipers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick lead. The two runs came when Andrew Bennett (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) homered with Jayden Grupe (Sr., Trimont, Minn.) on base after hitting a one-out single to center field.

After a scoreless second inning, the Blue Jays began to peck away at the Piper pitching, tying the game with two runs in the third on four hits, and then adding three runs each in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eight innings to go up 14-2.

Hamline had an opportunity to cut the Johns Hopkins' lead to under 10 runs and continue the game in the bottom of the eighth, but could only manage one run as Bennett led off with a solo shot to left field, his second homerun of the game and his fifth of the season.

With the loss, the Pipers drop to 9-8 overall.

Hamline returns to Minnesota to play one more double-header in the Metrodome on Wednesday, March 16 at 9:45 p.m. against Presentation. The Pipers are scheduled to open MIAC play on Saturday, March 29 at Carleton at 1:00 p.m.
