April 21
Baseball swept by St. Olaf
In game one, the Pipers (16-16, 6-8 in the MIAC) jumped on the board first. After retiring the side in order to start the game, Hamline leadoff hitter Aaron Thompson gave the Pipers a 1-0 lead with his second home run of the season. But the lead was short-lived as the Oles (21-2, 9-1) tallied five runs in the second. Left fielder Carson Jones hit a two-run single to start the scoring while Brian Astry added a two-run double. Jones went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs in game one. That would be all the Ole pitching staff needed. Ole starter Todd Mathison left after 2/3 innings with an injury and was replaced by John Sopiwnik (2-1), who went 4 1/3 innings. He allowed one earned run while striking out two and walking three. Hamline shortstop Andrew Bennett added his eighth home run of the year in the fifth. In game two, the Oles scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings before going on to a 5-0 win. Paul Johnson (7-1) hurled a complete game four-hitter for the win. He fanned seven and walked one along the way. Hamline starter Kyle Foster (6-4) took the loss, allowing five runs - four earned - through six innings of work. The Oles scored all the runs they would need in the fourth inning on a Tyler Johnson bases loaded single that plated a pair of run. The Pipers will travel to St. Thomas on Tuesday.
