Verdugo gets 100th victory in baseball split
Verdugo earned his 100th coaching win a year removed from leading the Pipers (14-13, 5-5 in the MIAC) to their first conference playoff berth in school history. The former pitcher accomplished the feat with the help of a three-hit shutout by senior starter Kyle Foster (6-3). Foster struck out seven and walked three for his second conference shutout of the season. He also blanked Gustavus 4-0 on April 9. The Scots (11-12, 2-4) went pitch-for-pitch with the Pipers as first-year James Murrey scattered seven hits. He fanned nine and walked two, but the Pipers finally got to Murrey in the seventh. Singles by Bill Sand and Lincoln Hughes put runners at the corners with one out before left fielder Aaron Thompson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kaczrowski followed with a single to center to plate the only run of the game. The second baseman was the only player in the game with two base hits. In game one, Macalester tallied singles runs in the first, third and fourth innings to come away with the win. Third baseman Adam Wedwick started the game with a solo home run off Hamline starter Dom Chenois (2-3), who left the game after 2/3 of an inning with an injury. Ted Kimble (4-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win. He gave up seven hits while striking out seven and walking four. Designated hitter Cody Ching added another solo shot in the second in the third inning while John Simkins had an RBI single in the fourth. The Pipers cut the lead to 3-2 with a two-run double by Matt Held in the sixth and had the game-tying run on third base with one out in the seventh, but couldn't tie the game. The Pipers will play at Bethel on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. |
