Solid pitching leads baseball to sweep![]()
![]() Making his first collegiate start, Letson (1-0) scattered seven hits in the victory. He struck out five and walked one. He made just one mistake in the contest, a solo home run by Daryl Visser in the third inning, but threw four scoreless innings to close out the game. The Pipers (5-3) tied the game without getting a hit in the fifth inning. After a Josh Roiger walk, the junior came all the way around to score when Dordt committed two errors on a Pat O'Laughlin sacrifice bunt. Hamline scored twice in the sixth to take the lead for good. Designated hitter James Bachmeier added a sacrifice fly while Roiger added an RBI single. The Pipers had just three hits in the contest, but made the most our of three Dordt fielding errors. Letson retired the Defenders (0-2) in order in the seventh to pick up the win. In game two, Hamline jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding on to win 6-3. The Pipers scored in each of the first four innings with an RBI base hit to grab the lead. After an Andrew Bennett sacrifice fly in the first, the Pipers scored two runs in the second on wild pitches. Bennett added an RBI fielder's choice in the third, and James McGee had a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Leftfielder Aaron Thompson went 3-for-3 in the contest with a double and a triple. The Pipers had seven hits in the contest. Foster (2-1) threw five innings of shutout ball before giving way to reliever Roiger, who shut the door on a Defender rally and nailed down his second save of the season. Foster pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs. He struck out five and walked one. Roiger fanned three batters in 1 2/3 innings. The Pipers will play in Phoenix, Ariz. over spring break. Their first game is March 17 against Luther. |
