Baseball sweeps Calvin in Arizona

Hamline improved their record to 9-5 with a sweep of Calvin Wednesday afternoon at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.

The Pipers took the first game by the score of 6-2 behind a solid pitching performance from Kyle Foster. The senior picthed 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out two and walked none.

Junior Josh Roiger pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the win.

The Pipers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two out, the Pipers strung together five straight singles to plate three runs. Bill Sand, Pat O'Laughlin, and Matt Held all had RBI singles during the inning.

Junior shortstop Andrew Bennett added a run-scoring double in the second and a two-run homer in the sixth. Bennett was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Sand also added three hits for the Pipers, who totaled 14 hits in the contest.

In game two, the Pipers scored three runs in the sixth to erase a 1-0 deficit. James Bachmeier started the scoring with a two-run single. The Pipers added a run on a wild pitch in the inning.

Sophomore Dom Chenois pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win, striking out five and walking two. Roiger came in for the final 1 2/3 innings to get the save.

The Pipers will play Williams on Thursday at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
