Baseball splits games with Bethany College

The Pipers scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to come back and take a 6-5 victory from Bethany College Monday afternoon at the Metrodome. Bethany came back to take the second game of the doubleheader 7-0.

Trailing 5-4, catcher James Bachmeier hit a one-out, run scoring triple to knot the score. Pinch runner Derek Rundquist later scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Matt Held.

Starting pitcher Josh Roiger (1-0) retired the Swedes in order in the bottom of the seven to earn the win. Roiger pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs while sriking out four and walking one.

The Pipers (2-2) took a 4-1 lead after three innings when third baseman Geoff Fuller hit a bases clearing three-run triple in the third inning, but the Swedes came back with single runs in the fourth and fifth and two runs in the sixth.

Both Bachmeier and Fuller added two hits to the Pipers' nine-hit attack.

In game two, the Swedes scored four runs in the first inning off Hamline starter Kyle Foster. After three straight hit batters to start the game, three different Bethany players had RBI singles in the inning.

Foster (1-1) took the loss - his first of the season. Swede starter Nick Miles struck out seven Pipers through five innings of work for the win.

The Pipers will play Mount Mercy Thursday afternoon at the Metrodome. First pitch is set for 3:45 p.m.
