Baseball defeats Albright 8-5

Junior Josh Roiger hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to give Hamline the lead and then earned his third save of the season as the Pipers defeated Albright 8-5 Monday afternoon at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.

The Pipers (7-5) trailed 5-3 in the top of the eighth when Roiger stepped up to the plate with one out. Roiger's first home run of the season came after Bill Sand and Pat O'Laughlin singled to open the inning and Geoff Fuller walked to load the bases.

Roiger then stepped on the mound, striking out the side in the eighth and allowing a two-out walk in the ninth for his third save of the season.

Hamline pounded out 16 hits compared to nine for Albright. Hamline took a 2-1 lead after three innings when Dan Kaczrowski and James Bachmeier each had RBI singles, but Albright scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth off starter Adam Letson.

Letson pitched six strong innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked one. Roiger struck out four of the seven batters he faced.

Aaron Thompson, Andrew Bennett, and O'Laughlin each added three hits for the Pipers. Bill Sand and Matt Held each added a pair of hits.

The Pipers will play Calvin on Wednesday at the Greater Phoenix Invitational. Game time is set for 1:00 a.m.
