Psychology at Hamline
The Department of Psychology embraces empirical methodology and stresses evidence-based approaches in psychology. The faculty strives to provide a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary, academic field of psychology and to stay abreast of current developments. They are actively engaged in the success of their students, providing a large internship network and opportunities for service and volunteer work, departmental assistantships, and research apprenticeships. Many students utilize current research within the field and learn how to conduct collaborative and independent research projects. For other students, there are opportunities in the applied aspects of psychology as a basis of service and service-learning, as well as a basis for improving the world of work.
There are many research opportunities for serious students with aspirations for careers in the field. Students have access to laboratories equipped for electrophysiological recording of EEG, ECG, and stress responses. We also have a new, interactive lab for research in developmental psychology. Students also have access to organizations such as Psi Chi, a national honor society for psychology majors, as well as to several other national organizations.
The psychology major offers a strong balance between traditional science and the liberal arts. As such, majors are equipped for a wide variety of occupations—not just in psychology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the top professions for psychology majors include: sales, top and mid-level management positions, social work, personnel training, medical occupations, business, and accounting. The economic outlook for psychology majors remains positive with professional opportunities in the field expected to increase by 15% through 2016.
