Two tickets please . . .
Summer is right around the corner and that means one thing: summer blockbusters are going to be hitting the theaters. Besides the obvious Spider-man 3 mega-movie on everybody’s minds, there are still many other huge hits set to debut. In fact, with big name franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Fantastic Four, and the Ocean’s films, this summer is bound to go down as the summer of the sequels.
Pirates of the Caribbean: at World’s End, set for release on May 25, is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer, let alone 2007. Last summer, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was the biggest box office seller in history, grossing over $135,000,000 in its first weekend. The new Pirates film is the third and final movie to be released in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. This Pirates has a great shot to top its prequels with help from stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley. It is a safe bet that this movie is going to be a great one to catch.
The Fantastic Four has yet another intergalactic adventure to be a part of in it’s sequel: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The team has to deal with a new character, the Silver Surfer, who cruises around on a silver surfboard creating havoc wherever he goes. The same main characters are returning for this sequel, but who knows if they will survive the Silver Surfer’s destruction? The film, set to be released on June 15, is expected to be one of the month’s most popular films.
Another June release receiving loads of hype is Ocean’s Thirteen. Similar to the previous Ocean’s movies, Ocean’s Thirteen is all about getting revenge. The movie’s cast has always been filled with A-list movie stars, and with the additions of Al Pacino and Ellen Barker to the crew, this sequel is setting the stage to blow the previous films away.
Other sequels worth catching this summer are: 28 Weeks Later (sequel to 28 Days Later) which debuts on May 11; Shrek the Third drops on May 18; Hostel: Part II is scheduled to open June 8; Evan Almighty is set to debut on June 22; Live Free or Die Hard (of the Die Hard franchise) is set for a June 29 release; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opens on July 13; The Bourne Ultimatum (of the Bourne Trilogy) opens on August 3; and comedy Rush Hour 3 is timed for an August 10 opening.
It's not a sequel, but for all the Transformers fans out there (if there are any), the television show is coming to the big screen on July 4. For those moviegoers who are unfamiliar with the Transformers, it is about two war-torn groups of robots, the Autobots (good guys) and the Decepticons (bad guys) from the planet Cybertron, who come to Earth to play out their final battle. Rising star Shia LaBeouf is thrust into the light as Earth’s last chance for survival.
With so many highly anticipated movies coming to theaters this summer, it may be hard to get out and see all of them, but it certainly will be fun to try.
