HUSC Pres and VP-elect embattled

News Editor

When HUSC’s president and vice-president elect present their proposed executive board to the congress on Tuesday, the duo is in for some tough questioning as to their choices.

As the Oracle went to press, Mike Elliot and Ed Elfmann’s proposed executive board was incomplete. One appointed member resigned from the appointment last Thursday. The rest, except for one, lack HUSC experience. None have been on the congress’s executive board before. Multiple sources inside HUSC said there is no chance the proposed board will pass. Others have said that vice president-elect Ed Elfmann is prepared to vote against his proposed executive board.

One source speculated that the board will not be passed this academic year, leaving HUSC’s summer plans in limbo. The source also said he expected Elliott to resign, forcing a special election to replace the vice president. The board, made up of HUSC committee chairs, is as such as of Thursday night:

Political Affairs Committe-Tony Brunner was selected, however he resigned the appointment late last Thursday. The position is currently vacant.

Student Organization Committee -Katelyn Polvoda.

Coalition for Social Change (CSC)čMatrika Bailey-Turner. Bailey-Turner, who is currently in Fiji, is the only member of the proposed board with prior HUSC experience. She was involved with CSC.

Political Relations Committee -Kimberly Barnes.

Economic Affairs Committee -None. Current chair Ian Johnson is graduating. In addition, two of EAC’s members, Aleksey Ozerkov and Carley Luse will be resident assistants next year. It is a long-standing policy that RAs do not serve on any organization’s executive board. Is it unclear if policy has been waved.

Technology CoordinatorčNone. Junior Dax Young, who has served in this position for three years, has declined to continue.

Treasurer-None. Senior Pete Winiecki, Elliott’s most vocal critic, is graduating.

During the candidate interviews, Erin Evans and Koome Kirimi, who are not HUSC members, were present during the interviews. Previously president and vie president-elects have declined to have outside consultation in on the executive board candidate interviews.

“They came and provided us with some insight in seeing things that we wouldn’t see,” Elliott said. Elfmann declined to comment on record for this story.

Elliott said the two had no decision-making power.

“Ed and I met individually after the applicants were interviewed,” Elliott said.

Elliott defended his choices, saying that when he was told about selecting the board, he was instructed to find people who had the capacity to fulfill the position.

“They can learn to do the job,” Elliott said. Others were not so convinced.

“He’s doing a real disservice to the students who elected him,” Winiecki said.

President-elect Michael Elliott is also embattled with HUSC’s Economic Affairs Committee (EAC). The committee cut nearly $80,000 of his proposed executive board budget.

“There wasn’t enough justification to the line items,” Elliott said.

Elliott appealed to the committee on April 26. EAC’s mood was visibly tense. As Elliott and Elfmann began their presentation, Winiecki and Tina VanSteenbergen got up and exited the room, leaving EAC with five members, enough to maintain a quorum.

After the meeting, Elliott approached Winiecki and asked Winiecki if he had anything to say to him. “I have nothing to say to you,” Winiecki said in response. Only the committee’s chair, Johnson, asked questions during the presentation.

Elliott and Elfmann were appealing for an additional $21,786.61 that EAC cut during their initial budgeting.

Despite the confrontations, Elliott said he is confident that EAC will approve his appeals.

“I think they’ll approve all of it,” he said.

Elliott and Elfmann were elected as write-in candidates on March 7 and topped the Tina VanSteengergen and Cindy Schuchardt by 92 votes.

HUSC’s general assembly meeting is at 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday in GLC 100E.
