MIAC post-season unlikely for tennis
Not unlike the men’s team, Piper women’s tennis find themselves near the bottom of the MIAC at this point in the season. Despite some solid play that resulted in their first conference win a couple of weeks ago, the Pipers have been struggling.
On Monday last week, the Pipers lost 5-4 to a middle of the road St. Catherine’s team. Number one doubles team senior Kristen Bothun and sophomore Kelly Gust handled St. Catherine’s number one team heavy handedly (8-1). The Pipers would lose the other two doubles matches.
Gust had a good day of play though. Claiming number two singles (7-6, (7-4), 1-6, 16-14. Sophomore Liz Gunderson defeated St. Catherine’s number three singles competition (7-5, 6-4). Senior Andrea (Dre) Eilerston won four singles (4-6, 6-4, 10-1).
On Wednesday the Pipers were back on the court, taking on another middle of the pack tennis team in Macalester. Hamline defeated Macalester 7-2. The Pipers swept doubles competition. Hamline won four of six singles matches too. Gunderson lost the number three match (2-6, 6-0, 10-2) and sophomore Stephanie England lost number six singles (7-6, (7-2), 6-2.
The Pipers last match at Bethel and begins at 4 p.m.
