Found in the Crowd
Hannah Kuether/Oracle: What are you studying?
Maura Youngman: Right now, I am a Communication Studies major and am getting the Certificate in International Journalism. I decided today that I’m tacking on a Linguistics minor.
O: Wow!
MY: People don’t even know linguistics exists, and I didn’t either, until today, after months of wishing Hamline had a linguistics minor, when my roommate was like, “Maura, they do!”
O: How did you get interested in that?
MY: I don’t know, I’ve always been interested in linguistics. Particularly etymology, the history of words. And I’ve been taking Russian at St. Thomas this semester, which is fun, but hard.
O: Did you take Russian in high school at all?
MY: I didn’t ... but I lucked out and tagged along with the second half of a Russian exchange program.
O: So you went to Russia?
MY: I went to Russia for like, six weeks, my sophomore year of high school. We went to Siberia ... yeah, we had a snow storm in August. I didn’t bring a coat. That was a mistake.
O: Have you traveled anywhere else abroad?
MY: I’ve been to England, Ireland, Iceland and Wales. And Canada, recently.
O: Canada totally doesn’t count as a foreign country in my book.
MY: Me either. But I did have a hell of a time getting in. [My friend] Mark and I went to Canada for spring break and were at the border near Winnipeg, and they held us up for two and a half hours.
O: Why?
MY: Good question. They searched every inch of Mark’s vehicle. They unpacked all my stuff. They looked at all my digital camera photos. Yeah.
O: Did you get in eventually and get to do anything?
MY: We found an all-vegan restaurant, that was a highlight for me.
O: What do you do in your free time?
MY: Mostly sudokus, I guess. And I like to read and hang out with my buddies, go to Rosedale and not buy anything.
O: What’s your favorite book you’ve ever read?
MY: I’ve always been a big fan of Neil Gaimon. He’s from Britain originally, but lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and writes sci-fi stuff. His book American Dogs is one of my favorites.
O: What’s it about?
MY: It’s kinda like a new-age, modern mythology. It’s about all these gods walking around, like god of television and god of thunder. That’s basically what it’s about.
O: If you were a god or goddess, what would you be god of?
MY: DDR [Dance Dance Revolution].
O: How often do you play DDR?
MY: I don’t play it so much anymore. I just went on vacation to Florida and we were staying half a block from an arcade with DDR and I ended up spending most of my money on Dance Dance Revolution. I played pretty hardcore my sophomore year of high school. It was pretty ridiculous-I lost like, ten pounds.
O: Oh my gosh!
MY: It is a party killer, because people just get mesmerized. No one talks. I haven’t gotten into Guitar Hero though.
O: Probably for the better.
MY: Probably. I like my GPA right now.
