'Sportsmanship Week' underway

Sports Editor

The newly charted Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) are teaming up to host Sportsmanship Week at Hamline. The theme of “sportsmanship” is determined by the NCAA, and this will be Hamline’s first year participating. The week of festivities will begin April 16 and conclude on April 21.

The week is filled to the brim with sporting events, free food, prizes, and contests. The event is the product of months of planning by the two organizations. Sportsmanship week is primarily funded by the FCA but is aided by the athletic department as well. The SAAC does not have a budget for this fiscal year because they were chartered only within the last two weeks.

“In some places, people rally around athletics. That’s not really the case at Hamline, but we’re trying to change that and give people something to do,” said senior Chris Lutz. Lutz is the SAAC President and FCA Committee Leader.
In the future, the SAAC is certain to host more events similar to Sportsmanship Week. The event exemplifies the mission of the new student organization. The SAAC is geared towards uniting athletics across campus, building a community around and within athletics, and gaining support for campus athletics to benefit all of campus as well as the surrounding community.
