Beyond the Bedroom: erotic expertise with Kelly Walsh
Dear Kelly,
What constitutes being a virgin? Is it when my hymen breaks? Does oral sex count?
-Vexed about Sex
Dear Vexed,
A virgin is a person who has not had sexual intercourse. However, the concept of virginity has many different definitions depending on whom you ask. The most important question is: what is your definition of virginity?
Some people believe that you don’t lose your virginity until you have vaginal intercourse, but this explanation excludes homosexuals. Others believe that if you have oral, vaginal, or anal sex you lose your virginity. Some even believe that kissing means you are no longer a virgin. Basically, there are an infinite number of ways people define virginity.
A common definition of virginity for females is if the hymen is intact. The hymen is a membrane located on the external area of the vagina. In this definition, if the hymen is broken, a female is no longer a virgin. The hymen, however, can break very easilyč even by using a tampončand some women are born without one.
Basically, male or female, there are many different ways to lose your virginity depending on what you believe. This is a good question to ask yourself to come up with your own personal definition.
Seven Bad Reasons to Lose Your Virginity
1. I am the only one who hasn’t. Even if you think you are the last person on earth to lose your virginity, you aren’t. Some people rush into losing their virginity and end up regretting it.
2. If I don’t use it, I will lose it. C’mon, has anyone really believed this to be true? There are ways to manage your sex drive other than having sex.
3. My partner told me they love me. Was the next phrase out of their mouth that they want to physically express that emotion with you? If so, they are probably just in blue-ball hell or the equally uncomfortable female equivalent.
4. My significant other said they would leave me if I didn’t have sex with them. I wouldn’t worry about them leaving you because you should already be out the door.
5. I’m horny and lonely. Go out with your friends, flirt with some hotties, come home and have some much needed alone time with your favorite toy.
6. I was promised expensive things. Stop. May I remind you that prostitution is illegal in Minnesota, and that this situation could be considered prostitution?
7. Why not? If you can’t come up with even one solid reason to lose your virginity, then don’t. There is a right time and place for everyone to lose their virginity, along with right reasons. Waiting for the best time for you is the smartest thing any virgin can do.
