Found in the Crowd

Melissa Hruza/Oracle: What’s your hometown?

Kelly Rodgers: Well, it’s complicated. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., then I moved to Parkersburg, W.Va., then Winchester, Ky., and then Plymouth, Minn.

O: OK, why did you move around so much?

KR: My dad’s job. Now, he owns a company named General Beer, but he did work for Pepsi [and] Miller Light.

O: Did you get a deal on Pepsi growing up?

KR: Yep.

O: Did you ever drink Coke?

KR: No [laughs], we were not allowed to drink Coke.

O: What brought you to Hamline?

KR: I transferred from St. Mary’s because of the law program. The program at St. Mary’s...they didn’t really have one, so I came to school here.

O: Are you planning on going to law school?

KR: Yes, I am planning on it. I’m taking the LSAT in June, so hopefully I’ll go in 2008.

O: What is the LSAT? Is it all legal stuff?

KR: No, you can take any major and go take the LSAT. It’s basically a pointless test that tests your logic. There’s a game section and a reading comprehension section. It’s basically figuring out how to take the test, but you don’t need a legal background at all.

O: So, you’re planning on law school. Any particular one?

KR: Somewhere in Minnesota? I wouldn’t mind going to Hamline. I would love the chance to go to the U, but it’s really hard to get into. If I got in there, I’d go there.

O: Are you involved in any activities on campus?

KR: I used to be, not so much anymore. I used to be involved in Mock Trial and softball.

O: Where do you live?

KR: I live off campus, two blocks away. I have, like, five roommates. So, there’s a lot of people in the house. I don’t like that, but I do like having my house and not living in the dorms and sharing showers.

O: Did you go anywhere over spring break?

KR: I did not. I worked. I work at Kaplan Law Firm in downtown Minneapolis, and I coached.

O: Is that an internship?

KR: It started out as an internship, and then it became a paid internship, and then it became a job. I really like it. I love the people. It’s criminal defense, which is not what I want to do, but it’s a good experience.

O: What would you like to do?

KR: Criminal prosecution.

O: So you might be working against some of those people?

KR: Exactly.

O: Anything else you want the Hamline community to know about Kelly?

KR: Um, you can just ask if you want to know anything. I like scrapbooking. I don’t like to read. I like working out. I like playing sports.
