Making tradition? Men's tennis trumps UST

Sports Editor

On April 2, the men’s tennis team defeated St. Thomas for the second consecutive year. The Pipers got impressive play from integral players in the 5-4 victory.

In 2006, the Tommies fell 7-2. The win comes at a time when the sixth-place Pipers are struggling. After a strong showing in exhibition play over spring break, the Pipers men’s tennis team had to shake off the relaxing effects of the Orlando beach and sun.

In their first match back against Concordia on March 31, the Pipers got roughed up to the tune of 2-7. Going into the match against the Tommies, Hamline was on the losing end of two consecutive meets.

At St. Thomas, Hamline claimed the top honors in number one doubles and singles with senior Andy Carlson. Carlson and doubles partner, senior Jon Breimhorst, defeated St. Thomas’ top pair, 8-6. Carlson also claimed the number one singles slot. Breimhorst claimed the second singles 6-2, 6-3. Senior Patrick Hueller claimed the third singles seat for Hamline, 7-5, 6-1.

Recently, the Pipers have been getting improved play and effort from junior Dan Vogel. Vogel defeated the Tommies’ Drew Carlson 6-1, 6-0, last week. Against Concordia, Vogel had two wins, one in doubles and one in singles. This is Vogel’s first year on the team. He joins Hamline tennis after playing football last year for former coach, Paul Miller.
With less than a month left in the season but much tennis left to be played, the Pipers are facing an uphill battle. It is unlikely that they can catch the undefeated first place Gustavus squad but MIAC playoffs are not out of reach.

On April 11, Hamline travels to Northfield to take on St. Olaf. It is a MIAC match and it’s set to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Oles are currently one win ahead of Hamline in the standings. On Saturday, April 14, the Pipers welcome St. John’s tennis team to Holt Court. The Johnnies have as many wins as the Oles. MIAC play starts at 11:00 a.m. at Hamline.
