Oil tanks did not fail
After looking into the cause of an oil spill at the Blue Garden this past winter, the Physical Plant found no evidence of any failure in the oil tanks themselves or problems with their design.
The site has been excavated. Physical Plant hired an environmental re-mediation company to do the clean-up. Director of Facilites Operations and Horticulture Services Ken Dehkes said that while there may still be a small amount of oil in the porous soil that cannot be removed without upsetting the tanks, the area poses no danger in regards to health.
“It shouldn’t impact anyone other than visually,” he said, adding that the site is only fenced in so environmental consultants can take test samples from the area if needed.
Physical Plant is currently waiting to hear from the state on what Hamline’s obligations are “so we can continue to move forward,” Dehkes said. The letter should arrive soon, and more will be known next week.
It is expected that the state will recommend Hamline hire an environmental consultant who will examine the spill grounds to see if any further work needs to be done.
