New HUSC president seeks executive board
Michael Elliott and Ed Elfmann’s HUSC election win last month came as a surprise, Elliott said in an interview last Thursday.
Elliott exhaled deeply, saying, “I think that’s my biggest reaction.”
Elliott said that he thinks he was more surprised than the student body was.
“We all remained optimistic [during the campaign], but we knew it would be difficult,” he said, citing their write-in only situation. “We put in 210 percent because of that. It makes you appreciate even more every student who voted.”
Elliott said that he and Elfmann did a significant amount of door-knocking and met with students often in order to ensure the campus knew they were running.
With the elections now passed, the two are making plans for next year. They have already met with some of the other candidates who ran during the election to talk about plans, as Elliott says he feels it is important to stay connected.
Elliott and Elfmann plan to work directly with students to determine what they feel is a good aspect of Hamline life and what they would like to see changed.
“When people ask me what my main issues are, it’s hard to answer- because the student body hasn’t told me yet,” Elliott said. He and Elfmann plan on hosting an informal dialogue session with Hamline students to talk about what they would like to see happen next year. At the time this newspaper went to press, the details were still being worked out, but the discussion will probably be held on April 10.
“It’s an opportunity for students to share with Ed and I what their expectations of us are,” Elliott said.
The team is now accepting applications for seven executive board positions that will be opening next year, which can be picked up in the HUB near the student organization office and should be turned in by April 12. Applications can also be completed online; Elliott said they have already received one application from a student who is currently in Fiji. Students looking for more information can check out the Facebook group HUSC Executive Board Application.
Elliott and Elfmann’s plans include strengthening campus organizations, improve the way committees in HUSC function, increasing communication between HUSC and other organizations and setting aside money for student-initiated activities. Elliott said that this will benefit those students who are not in campus organizations, but still want to see their ideas come to fruition.
The most important part of their strategy for next year, Elliott said, is making sure that the needs of students are recognized, and that the student body as a whole has an active part in the decisions made by the organization.
“We don’t want complacency, and we don’t want inaction,” he said.
