Found in the Crowd
Hannah Kuether/Oracle: So, what is your major?
Sean Murray: German.
O: Have you been to Germany?
SM: Yeah, I was there last J-term. It was really fun; we drank every day.
O: Would you go back?
SM: I am going backčnext spring.
O: What brought you to Hamline?
SM: Umm, originally because everyone was so laid-back when I came and interviewed here. I actually dropped out after first semester. I went home and worked a crappy-ass job, lived with my parents and decided I needed to get out and come back here.
O: Did you take a whole year off?
SM: No, I took spring semester off and that whole summer. I just worked and played music.
O: What do you play?
SM: Kazoo and tuba.
O: Do you have a band?
SM: Yeah, it’s an interesting band. It’s me and another guy that plays the harmonica.
O: Amazing. Do you have a name for your band?
SM: No, we don’t have many shows, normally on street corners and stuff. We put hats out, like outside Twins games and stuff.
O: Have you played any shows around here recently?
SM: Yeah, actually I played at Big V’s.
O: With your kazoo and harmonica band?!
SM: No! [laughs] With Dios Mio, it’s hardcore punk. I play guitar.
O: After you graduate, what do you plan on doing?
SM: Mow lawns? Continue my kazoo
career? I’ll figure something out, something will find me. That’s how it normally worksčany major decisions in my life I don’t really have to make, they get made for me by the universe.
O: So, you’re paying $120,000 for four years at Hamline to mow lawns.
SM: Exactly. Well, there’s a good chance I might live in Germany someday. I wish Germany was where Spain is, I’d live there in an instant because Germany is cold and rainy a lot of the winter.
O: I don’t like that in-between stuff.
SM: Thing is, I lived in Hawaii when I was three months to three years old and I think my body got used to that weather while I was developing.
O: Why were you in Hawaii?
SM: My dad was in the Navy. I don’t really remember it, which sucks.
O: Did you live a lot of different places?
SM: Yeah. I was born in Rhode Island, lived in Hawaii until I was three, Boston until I was seven and managed to end up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I got screwed over. [laughs]
O: What else should we know about you?
SM: I really love Mariah Carey and t.A.T.u.
O: Do you have any tattoos?
SM: Yeah. [shows forearm with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ symbol tattoo] I’m a ridiculously huge fan. I won’t go to any more concerts though, their last album sucked. There were four songs I liked and the rest were garbage. I don’t know how it happened.
O: I didn’t think it was all bad.
SM: I like Blood Sugar Sex Magik and their album from ’85.
O: They were together in 1985? They’re old.
SM: They’re like, 40. It’s awesome.
