One student | Meeting many nations-Yulyia Oleksandra

Do you ever catch yourself taking your education for granted? Here in the United States, though there are many scholarship opportunities, in other parts of the world, chances are fewer and farther between. Here’s one example of how a NACEL student takes advantage of her educational opportunities.

Yulyia Oleksandra won a Ukranian government competition to attend high school at Hamline. She is one of only two NACEL students from Ukraine. “Our [Ukraine’s] government sends students through the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program to learn about the cultural differences between the U.S. and Ukraine, and expects us to change something in the lives of people when we go back, and make it better,” she said.

Part of the program also includes committing at least 30 hours of her time to volunteer work. When asked about what her schedule is like in comparison to Ukraine’s school system, she replied with “We have 20-25 subjects that we must take each week. We do not get to choose our subjects like you do in the U.S.”
